The complete guide to getting back on track with confidence

Spring bike tune-up

Before your first outing of the season, good maintenance can make all the difference. Here's why it's important and how to do it.
Step 1

Duct and cable checks

Check that the brake and derailleur housings are not damaged:

  • No visible metal strands
  • No kinks in the housing

Also check that the derailleur cable(s) are not frayed at the ends. A damaged cable can cause tension problems and affect your gear changes.

If you have SRAM AXS (wireless) derailleurs, cable inspection does not apply.

Step 2

Tire Checks

Make sure both of your tires are inflated to the correct pressure:

  • Mountain bike (tubeless): between 21 and 33 psi
  • Gravel bike: between 36 and 65 psi
  • Road bike: between 80 and 120 psi
  • Hybrid bike: between 40 and 70 psi

For more information, see our guide: How to find the ideal tire pressure for your bike?

Next, inspect the general condition of the tires. Check for cracks on the sidewalls. If you have a mountain bike, make sure the knobs are not too worn.

Step 3

Check for loose components

Before riding, ensure all bicycle components are properly tightened and that there is no undesirable play.

  • Headset: Hold the front wheel firmly between your legs and try to turn the handlebars. They should not move independently of the wheel.
  • Crank arms: Grasp each arm and try to move it sideways. No play should be felt.
  • Wheels: Check that the front and rear wheels are securely in place and that the axles or quick-release levers are properly tightened.

A loose component can cause noise, affect your bike control, or even become dangerous while riding.

Step 4

Clean and lubricate the bike

A clean bike rides better and lasts longer. After winter, a good cleaning is essential before hitting the road again.

  • Frame and components: Clean the frame, wheels, and brakes with warm water and mild soap. Avoid high-pressure water jets, which can force water into the bearings.
  • Chain: Apply a suitable lubricant to each link, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.

To find out which lubricant to choose, consult our guide: The best chain lubricants for the Quebec climate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bicycle Maintenance

Everything you need to know before you get started.

At least once a year, ideally in spring before you start riding again. If you ride frequently or in difficult conditions (rain, mud, winter), a second service in autumn is a good idea.
Yes, basic checks like tire pressure, loose components, and chain lubrication can easily be done at home. However, if you're not comfortable with brake or derailleur adjustments, it's best to leave that to a mechanic.
If you do it yourself, allow about 30 to 45 minutes. In the shop, it depends on how busy they are, but the work itself usually takes less than an hour.
Probably, but we'll have to check. Cold and humidity can cause rust on the chain, crack the tires, and affect the air pressure. That's exactly why pre-season maintenance is so important.
Yes. Even without riding, the chain can dry out or accumulate moisture. A dry chain will wear out faster and you will feel it in your pedalling.
